What’s in your ice cream?

These days, most ice creams are full of toxic additives.  Ice cream manufacturers are not required by law to list the additives used in their products.  Independent testing has discovered some toxic chemicals in ice cream that don’t appear on the ingredient list. What else are they hiding?

DIETHYLGLYCOL: a cheap chemical, used instead of eggs as an emulsifier. It is also used in antifreeze and paint remover.

PIPERONAL: used instead of vanilla. This chemical is also used to kill lice.

ALDEHYDE C-17: used as a cherry flavor for ice cream.  It is inflammable and used in plastic and rubber products.

ETHYL ACETATE: used as pineapple flavoring. It is also a cleaner for leather and textiles.  The vapors are known to cause chronic lung, liver, and heart damage.

BUTYRALDEHYDE: use as a nut flavor in ice cream. It is also an ingredient in rubber cement.

AMYLACETATE: used as banana flavoring.  It is also an oil paint solvent.

BENZYL ACETATE: used as strawberry flavoring. It is a nitrate solvent.

Next time you are in the ice cream section, remember all these carcinogens and potential allergens hiding away in your dessert and head for the organic Greek yogurt instead. Make a delicious sauce to turn the yogurt into a dessert. Raw cacao powder is packed with antioxidants and nutrients that make this the healthiest form of chocolate! Agave nectar is very sweet and has a low glycemic index. Celtic sea salt has not been chemically processed and therefore contains natural minerals in bioavailable forms. Choosing the best ingredients will make your dessert experience healthy without compromising the flavor!

Cacao and agave sauce:

1/2 cup organic raw cacao powder

1 cup organic raw agave nectar

1/8 tsp Celtic sea salt

1/2 tsp organic vanilla extract

Add all ingredients except vanilla into a saucepan. Bring to a simmer on medium heat and continuously stir with a whisk until cacao has melted into the agave. Place the pan in cold water, stir in the vanilla, and continue stirring until the sauce has cooled. Spoon onto the yogurt and enjoy!
