Top 5 Supplements for Whole Wellness

One of the most common questions I get from my clients is about supplements.  Do we need to take them?  What brand?  How do I know what to take?  What supplements are good for general wellness?

I have listed 5 great supplements that can provide a foundational support for your health.  However, you may need different or additional nutrients, depending on your unique health status, history, and environment.

1. Multivitamin – With the country’s poor soil quality, plants just don’t contain the level of nutrients they used to.  A high quality multivitamin with all essential micronutrients at therapeutic levels can provide a foundation to correct any deficiencies from dietary intake.

2. Cod Liver Oil – A high quality omega-3 supplement provides support for many aspects of health, including balancing lipid levels, reducing inflammation, nourishing your nervous system, enhancing cellular communication and hormone levels.  Look for refrigerated, liquid sources as they are most likely to not be rancid.  Even better, try fermented Cod Liver Oil for highly bioavailable, nutrient rich oil.  Visit greenpasture.org to order.

3. Probiotics – Probiotics are fantastic for your immune system, digestion, elimination of toxins, production of b vitamins and vitamin k, and protection against infections.  Look for a supplement with at least 10 billion microorganisms for maintenance support, with much higher doses for more therapeutic benefits. Again, quality is a major concern as these are live organisms that are easily contaminated and destroyed in processing.  Find a brand that can provide evidence that the strains and amounts they claim on the label are verified in the final product, as many companies do not have this quality assurance.

4. Curcumin – This powerful phytochemical supports many facets of health, but it is especially known for it’s anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer effects.  It’s great for reducing inflammation and joint pain, terrific for cancer prevention, improves liver health and digestive health, and is quite a strong influencer of your epigenome, supporting healthy cellular activity.  Curcumin is very difficult to absorb in the GI tract, so looking for a high quality, bio-available source is very important to consider, otherwise you will be wasting your money.

5. Whole Foods Green Powder – An organic whole foods powder with dozens of fruits, vegetables, and botanicals will provide you with a wide variety of phytochemicals and nutrients to support all systems of health.  Most importantly, a greens powder will nourish your immune system, alkalize your body, and restore and revitalize cells to reduce oxidation and signs associated with aging.

As mentioned before, different or additional supplements may be better suited to complement your health.  Some examples of additional supportive nutrients include green tea extract for antioxidant support and cancer prevention, digestive enzymes for any heartburn or digestive disturbances, Ashwaganda for hormonal imbalances, especially stress support, or lavender oil for generalized anxiety.  However, these top 5 supplements will provide a strong basis of support that can dramatically improve your health and reduce your risk of developing disease.

A Note About Quality

Finding high quality supplements is very important, just as it is to find high quality food.  You want supplements from GMP certified facilities, preferably from health care practitioner sources, in order to insure you are getting your money’s worth!  For more information, see my article about choosing the right supplements.
