Why is it important to support your liver and detoxify your body?
Everyday, we are exposed to toxins everywhere: in the air we breathe, the foods we eat, and the materials we touch. The metabolic processes in our bodies even produce toxic chemicals inside us. These toxins cause irritation and inflammation throughout the body.
Facts:
- More than 300,000 new chemicals are created each year
- The EPA estimates that in 1990, 70,000 chemicals were commonly used in pesticides, foods, and drugs.
- More than 1 billion tons of pesticides are used in the U.S. each year
- Americans consume on average, 14 lbs of food additives (including colorings, preservatives, flavorings, emulsifiers…)
- The average person is exposed to over 100 chemicals every day (in your shampoo, deodorant, cleaning products, gasoline, hair products, cosmetics, lotions, dish soap, pesticides, food additives and more!)
- Our own bodies produce toxins during metabolism and if we are overloaded with toxins, our bodies can’t neutralize and excrete them, so we store the toxic chemicals in our cells.
The liver is the most important organ for detoxifying the body. It finds the toxins stored in our fat cells and circulating in our blood, neutralizes them, and sends them to the kidneys for excretion. But with the overwhelmingly high amounts of toxins we are exposed to, the liver can easily fall behind. Detoxification is only one of it’s myriad of functions (others include regulating blood sugar, making 13,000 different enzymes, activating and breaking down hormones, making cholesterol and bile, filtering your blood every 3 minutes, and more).
Signs your liver is overburdened and needs help regaining healthy function:
- Indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn
- Sinusitis, chronic cough, difficulty breathing
- Chronic fatigue, difficulties concentrating and remembering, apathy
- Headaches or migraines
- Joint pain, arthritis, stiffness, aching muscles
- Chron’s disease
- Hot flushes, anxiety/panic attacks
- Acne, eczema, dermatitis
- Food cravings, overweight, compulsive eating, water retention
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of your eyes)
- Hepatitis
- Cirrhosis
As you can see, the liver affects all other aspects of your body. From your skin, to your energy levels, brain function, weight, digestion, joints, and muscles. Even your emotions are at the hands of your liver.
